About Washington Township

Washington Township is a picturesque part of Morris County with a rural feeling. There’s an  abundance of farmland and the area is an ideal setting for residents who appreciate a peaceful lifestyle with some privacy and larger property space.  

 

Washington Township encompasses the largest municipality in Morris County stretching 45 square miles. The two main sections of Washington Township

are Long Valley and Schooley’s Mountain.  

 

There is a mecca of shopping and dining options in nearby towns like  Mt. Olive and Roxbury. You will find large chain stores such as Sams Club, Target, Loews and almost everything else you can imagine.  You’re also close to charming Chester if you’re looking for a more unique shopping experience with antique shops and art galleries as well as charming sidewalk cafes.  

 

There’s a huge variety of homes in the area. You will find sprawling colonials on several acres, smaller neighborhoods with bi-levels and charming farmhouses.  

There are several parks and sports fields located throughout the area  for adults and children. Located on Schooley’s Mountain Road in Long Valley, the Schooley’s Mountain General Store is the oldest operating general store in New Jersey. This old-fashioned shopping experience offers a deli, gifts and a United State post office.


When driving through the area you can’t miss The Liberty Eagle which is located at the intersection of Schooley’s Mountain Road and Flocktown Road. Known by locals as "Bert, the 16-foot eagle was carved by Harry Robinson of Bernardsville from an ancient white oak tree.

Washington Township School District:

The top rated Washington Township Public School District includes five elementary schools. Old Farmers Road School serves students in kindergarten through grade 5. Walter J. Kossmann School is for kindergarten to grade 2.  Flocktown Road School serves grades 3 to 5, and Long Valley Middle School is for those in grades 6 through 8. Benedict A. Cucinella Elementary School serves students in kindergarten to grade 4. 

 

High school students attend West Morris Central High School, which is located in Chester Township and is part of the West Morris Regional High School District. Students in the district come from the surrounding Morris County areas of Chester BoroughChester TownshipMendham BoroughMendham Township and from Washington Township.

Commuting from Washington Township:

Washington Township is easily accessible to Route 206, Route 10 and Interstate 80. New Jersey Transit and Martz bus stops are located within a short drive of Washington Township for service to Manhattan. New Jersey Transit  train line has stops in nearby Mount Olive and Hackettstown. Some in the area drive about 20 minutes to the Rockaway Townsquare Mall for express buses to Manhattan.The township is about 50 miles from NYC.
